As A Photographer, Who Worked In Front Of The Camera For Years As A Model, I Came To Understand And Now Hope, I May Be Able To Articulate Some Root Precepts, I Feel, Are Necessary To Achieve Compelling Photography…
When Photographing A Subject, Or Model, I Try To Find A Moment Where They Are Focused…But Not Upon Themselves…At That Moment Of Capture. And By Watching Or Waiting For This Moment, Or Drawing It Out Of Them With Coaching, If Necessary, It Will Come…That Focus Upon The Camera, Like This Cat Is Doing, Or The Focus Of Something Off Camera, Often Will Result In An Image Where We, As The Audience, Are Drawn Into The Essence Of That Person, Animal, Object Of Nature, Etc….Even The Artistry Of A Building, Structure, Thing, If Done Well…You Name It.
Simplicity, In Itself, Is Often Your Advantage. Too Much Going On In A Photo Works For Some, But Not Me. I Feel It Takes Away From The Beauty Of What God Has Created In All Of Us And Beyond, Including Man Made Objects, By Virtue Of Distraction With Too Much Information Going On To Take In.
As My Photography Is Done With The Desire To Move Others, I Try To Find, In A Situation, The Most Compelling Moment Of Expression I Can, Or Point Of Interest, In That Scene Or Scenario…In Fact, The Same Concept That Draws You In With This Cat Photo, I Feel Is The Same Concept You Should Be Striving For, When Photographing People…
A Strong, Clean Image With A Focused Stare. And Done So, By The Cat, While Captured And Edited By Me To Feature It, Invites The Audience To Look Further Into The Image And Eyes Of The Subject. This Creates Connection With The Subject And Its, Or Their, World, Depending Upon Who Or What, Of Course. As Well, By Editing To Enhance The Strength Of The Cat’s Presence Against The Background, It Further Enables The Audience To Appreciate The Beauty Of The Cat, Without Distraction.
When That Can Be Accomplished (And, To Point Out, As A Self-Taught Photographer, This Will Always Be A Work In Progress, And Insatiably Fascinating, As A Result Of The Limitless Growth That Can Occur In Creating), It Allows The Audience To Go On The Journey With The Subject…Or To Inhabit Their World For A Moment In Time.
THAT Is The Essence Of What Makes A Potent Or Compelling Image. And, I Hope This Concept Will Be Your Take Away Today, When You Find Yourself Creating Next Time! It Really Is About Thinking About Your Audience, Simplifying And Finding The Most Beautiful Aspect, To Show Off About The Subject For Themselves And Others, Which Is Usually When They Are Most Focused In Their Energy.
And, Speaking Of Energy, I Will Write On Capturing Moments That Are Focused, Yet Result In “Motion Blurs” As Photographic Captures, When The Energy Of A Subject Is In Motion Soon…And How That Too, Can Be Compelling When Done With The Right Ideas In Play.
